How to Keep Raccoons Out of Your Garbage
It's a morning ritual no one enjoys: walking out to your driveway to find your trash can tipped over and last night's leftovers scattered across the lawn. Raccoons are intelligent, dexterous, and persistent. Here is how to outsmart them.
1. Secure the Lid
A simple snap-on lid is no match for a raccoon. They can easily pop it off or tip the can over to spill the contents.
- Bungee Cords: Hook a bungee cord through the handle, over the lid, and onto the other handle.
- Heavy Objects: Place a cinder block or heavy rock on top of the lid (though strong raccoons can sometimes push these off).
- Locking Cans: Invest in a trash can specifically designed with a locking mechanism.
2. Eliminate the Odor
Raccoons have an incredible sense of smell. If they can't smell the food, they won't work as hard to get to it.
- Double Bag: Use high-quality trash bags and double bag meat or strong-smelling scraps.
- Rinse Containers: Rinse out meat trays and takeout containers before throwing them away.
- Ammonia: Spraying ammonia inside the can or on the bags can mask food odors and repel raccoons (they hate the smell).
3. Change Your Routine
If possible, keep your trash cans inside your garage or shed until the morning of pickup. Raccoons are nocturnal; if the cans aren't out at night, they can't raid them.
4. Motion Lights
Install a motion-activated floodlight pointing at your trash storage area. The sudden burst of bright light can startle raccoons and send them scurrying.
