The "Backfill" Mistake
Many homeowners try to simply fill the groundhog's hole with dirt, rocks, or concrete. This rarely works. Groundhogs are powerful diggers and will simply dig a new exit right next to the old one, often causing even more damage to your structure in the process.
Multiple Exits
Groundhog burrows are complex tunnel systems with multiple entrances and exits (usually 2-5). Blocking one hole does nothing if the others remain open. You must address the entire system.
The Only Permanent Solution: Exclusion Trenching
To keep groundhogs from burrowing under a deck, shed, or porch, you must install a physical barrier they cannot dig through or under. This is called an L-Footer or Trench Guard.
- Dig a Trench: Dig a trench 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide around the base of the structure.
- Install Wire Mesh: Use heavy-gauge hardware cloth (1/2" or 1/4"). Bend it into an "L" shape.
- Secure It: Attach the top of the "L" to the structure and lay the bottom part flat in the trench pointing outward.
- Bury It: Fill the trench back in. When a groundhog tries to dig down, they hit the wire mesh and stop.
