The 3-Step Mouse Control Process

🔍

1. Inspection

You must find how they are getting in. Look for holes the size of a dime. Check where pipes enter the home, corners of the garage, and foundation vents.

🧱

2. Exclusion

Seal every hole you find. Use steel wool mixed with caulk or expanding foam. Mice can chew through plain foam, but the steel wool stops them.

3. Trapping

Once the house is sealed, trap the mice inside. Snap traps are humane and effective. Place them along walls (runways) with peanut butter bait.

Why Poison is a Bad Idea

Many homeowners reach for rodenticides (poison) first. Here is why professionals advise against it for indoor use:

  • ❌ Dead Mice in Walls: Poisoned mice often crawl into wall voids to die. The smell of a decomposing mouse can last for weeks and is unbearable.
  • ❌ Pet Safety: Dogs and cats can be poisoned by eating the bait or by eating a poisoned mouse (secondary poisoning).
  • ❌ Doesn't Solve the Problem: Poison kills some mice, but if you don't seal the entry points (Exclusion), new mice will simply move in to replace them.
