How to Get Rid of Snakes
A safety-first guide to removing snakes and keeping them away from your property
đ Call 502-660-8150CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING
Never attempt to handle, kill, or remove a snake unless you are 100% certain of its species. Venomous snakes like Copperheads can be easily mistaken for harmless ones. A bite can be life-threatening and medically expensive.
When in doubt, back away slowly and call a professional.
Steps to Snake-Proof Your Property
1. Eliminate Food Sources
Snakes are there to eat. If you have snakes, you likely have a rodent problem. Get rid of the mice and rats, and the snakes will move on.
2. Remove Hiding Spots
Clear tall grass, brush piles, wood stacks, and debris. Snakes need cover to feel safe; remove it, and they feel exposed.
3. Seal Entry Points
Inspect your foundation for cracks. Seal gaps around pipes and vents. Snakes can squeeze through gaps as small as a quarter inch.
Snake Repellents: Do They Work?
The Truth About Repellents
Most commercial snake repellents (mothballs, sulfur, lime) are ineffective. Snakes do not "smell" the way humans do, and these chemicals often do nothing to deter them. In fact, using mothballs outdoors is illegal and harmful to the environment.
The only proven way to keep snakes away is habitat modification and physical exclusion (fencing and sealing).
