The Signs
- Surface runways in the grass (looks like veins)
- Small, clean holes about 1-2 inches wide (no dirt mound)
- Gnaw marks around the base of trees
- Plants suddenly wilting (roots eaten)
The Habitat
Voles love heavy ground cover. They thrive in tall grass, heavy mulch, and under snow cover. They use this cover to hide from predators while they eat.
Effective Control Strategies
1. Habitat Modification (Most Important)
Keep grass cut short. Pull mulch away from tree trunks (create a "donut" of bare soil). Remove ground cover near gardens.
2. Tree Guards
Install 1/4" mesh hardware cloth around the base of young trees. Bury it 3-6 inches deep to prevent digging under.
3. Trapping
Snap traps placed perpendicular to runways can be effective for small populations. Professional trapping is best for large infestations.
